Does a simple smile really affect another person's day? Can a few simple words turn an otherwise miserable situation in a lighter direction? When would such gestures be appropriate? I say...ALWAYS! Although it may seem to some 'easier said than done', I believe that this applies to ones self most of all! You can make it happen....
A short while ago at work when there was no reason whatsoever to be laughing, I was! The environment wasn't hectic persay, just tense. In my mind I brought myself to a place where no one else was and enjoyed every minute of it! I had someone ask me; "Why are you laughing?" I simply replied;
"Well, I can be one of three things.. ..I can be happy, miserable or nothing at all. I choose the fore-mentioned!" With that, she paused for a split second and then smiled herself. From that point on every time I saw her that day, she gleaned a smile back at me! She took my comment at face value, and understood that she too can do the same. All from a simple smile and a few simple words.
Of course I've had and have problem's. Why, those who know me best would tell you that I would have ample cause to just end it all at times. That I've literally walked on the bottom of hell's ocean and there were times when I simply did not want to be 'cheered up'. But, I made it through with simple gestures from others. Just because I don't 'show' tough times, doesn't mean that I don't have them. Yet no one knows that..I won't let them. People who don't know me at all offer up good sensation's unknowing, of course, of any dread I may be feeling when they do. However, that simplicity helps me. I believe it helps us all! Simple smiles and gestures are like money. Even when you just don't have it, you always manage to find a little spare change somehow, somewhere and are able to move on, maybe even give a little to someone in need.
When situations are tough, it's OK to go back to those times and melt into them. It's OK to laugh at yourself! It makes other's as well laugh with you even if they don't know why! Enjoy it because it really is OK to find some spark of 'happy' in any situation! Back to memories in another post..these are the good ones! So, 'smile and the world smiles with you'? Yeah, I think it does. P
