Making a Survivor Soundtrack

Thank you, Jerome for this Survivor Soundtrack idea. The idea is to list seven albums that you absolutely have to have if you are to survive alone on an island. Hence, a “survival soundtrack”! The significance of seven, obviously one for every day of the week, is perfect! In no particular order, here’s my list:

1) Achtung Baby – U2. These guys literally have written the “soundtrack” of my life. But this, in my opinion, is their best work. And like the Beatles, most of their work are all great.. One, Until The End of the World, The Fly, Mysterious Ways, Light my Way, Wild Horses…great stuff! I would have added “The Joshua Tree”, but .…ok, consider that an honorable mention!

2) Who’s Next – The Who. Remember, this is not a greatest hits collection! Every song is different, and absolutely perfect. I really wished Pete Townsend would have finished the Rock Opera for these songs. It would have been incredible! Baba O’Riley, Won’t Get Fooled Again, The Song is Over, and of course, Bargain! Pete Townsend is as great a songwriter as he is a guitarist.

3) Songs to Learn and Sing – Echo and the Bunnymen. I heard The Killing Moon on the radio back in the eighties, looked for the album, and found this. I have been playing this album since then, and probably have bought the cd three or four times because I’ve overplayed these songs. Seven Seas, Silver, Bring on the Dancing Horses, and of course, The Killing Moon is just amazing!

4) History – America’s Greatest Hits. This album was a staple in my parents’ house growing up. Not only did my parents loved this album, all my brothers and sisters always played it as well! The acoustic guitar sound these guys made, is in my opinion the coolest ever! Enough to inspire me to learn to play the guitar. Just listen to Ventura Highway and you’ll know what I mean!

5) Legend – Bob Marley. I don’t think I know of any music lover who doesn’t love this album! Since I am gonna be stuck on an island, might as well have the best reggae album ever! Redemption Song, Waiting in Vain, No Woman, No Cry…Talk about really deep songs! One Love baby!!

6) Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack – The Bee Gees and others. All right, I’ll admit it, this is a “disco” album. But so what? These songs are the best collection of dance songs ever put together! Falsetto and all, I love the Bee Gees! They are probably one of the most underrated bands of all time. Come on, you get funky on Staying Alive, and then slow dance on How Deep Is Your Love! Even if no one is around. Especially if no one is around! Hey, You Should be Dancing!

7) Abbey Road – The Beatles. I know some Beatle fanatics would probably have seven Beatle albums on this list, but to me, Abbey Road is their best work! I love everything the Beatles did, but this album is my most listened to. Something, Come Together, Oh Darling, Here Comes The Sun, Carry That Weight, Golden Slumbers, The End…just amazing timeless music!
