Read Biographies!

I once read that “if you want to be a great man, you have to read great men’s biographies.” Through biographies, you"ll learn what people thought and how they achieved greatness! You"ll learn that greatness is achieved by hard work and dedication, taking big risks, and believing in yourself.

I’ve read quite a few self-help books. I've absorbed many great suggestions, but when you read about a person’s life, experiences, challenges, downfalls, successes, they stay in your memory stick better. The connection you get is more personal, like you’ve actually walked in their shoes!

If you ask anyone that knows me well, you will know that I am a huge U2 fanatic! When I started to look for biographies of great men, of course I started with Bono. (I’m laughing as I wrote this, but it’s so very true!) I’ve also read biographies of Ferdinand Magellan, Michaelangelo, St. Augustine, Abraham Lincoln, John Lennon, Frida Kahlo, Mother Teresa, Buddha, Mohhamed, to name some. I was lucky enough to vacation in Italy last year. While there, I purchased a biography of Michaelagelo. It was great to read about his life while I visited his major works of art; David, The Pietta, and the Sistine Chapel. He quickly became my number one “artist hero”! He was such a bad seed, that he outlived all his peers. He died in his nineties at the time when the life expectancy of people was about forty-five! He definitely believed in himself!
I read a biography on Mohammed after I read the Koran. With all the bad rep that Islam has received this decade, many people want to know more about Islam. Actually, if you want to be truly informed about Islam, don’t just read the Koran, read about Mohammed’s life!

Two more “biography type” book suggestions:
Please read “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. Next to the Bible, I believe it is the best self-help book in existence! Yes, I would go that far describe this book! This book has been around forever. The stories of “great men”, Henry Ford, Thomas Alba Edison and his “assistant”, Andrew Carnegie, and many others, are utterly inspirational! This book was the original “Secret”!

And last but definitely not least, read the Bible! Talk about reading about people’s lives! Abraham, Moses, Noah, David, Solomon, St. Paul, and of course, Jesus! Could anyone inspire you more than these great people? This might sound strange, but some people put too much emphasis on the holiness of the Bible! Sometimes if you read it as a biography, as a history book, as a self-help book, you’d get more out of it! Inspiration doesn’t only come from the heart, it also comes from the mind!
